Proofreading Service
Proofreading Service
A thorough proofreading of your manuscript does more than perfect grammar; it gives you the confidence to introduce your work to the world.
As an experienced and certified proofreader, I'm dedicated to helping authors present the best version of themselves and their work. I offer proofreading services for manuscripts of all types and lengths, addressing grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style to ensure a polished and professional final product. Whether you're planning to self-publish or beginning the traditional submission process, I'll make sure your work shines, captivating readers, agents, editors, and publishers alike.
What to Expect from a Professional Proofreading Service
• I'll ensure your draft is free of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors as well as any minor typographical mistakes.
• I'll also make sure your work demonstrates a consistent style throughout. The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) is the traditionally prefered stylebook for fiction, but I'm happy to use the stylebook of your choice. You'll also have the opportunity to create a custom style sheet for your work to outline any preferences that may fall outside of a specific style (e.g., non-traditional spellings, specific rule exceptions, non-standard language).
• Upon completion of the service, you'll receive two copies of your manuscript: a “clean copy,” free of all errors, and a “track-changes draft,” which will allow you to see all changes made and read any necessary comments or explanations.
What You Should Not Expect from a Proofreading Service
• Proofreading is not an in-depth editing service and has a very limited scope restricted to surface-level issues only. Think of it as being sentence-level editing. It's a proofreader’s job to ensure each individual sentence is clear and correct and to ensure consistency of the piece on a technical level. Proofreaders do not:
—rewrite or restructure large portions of text to clarify or enhance the story
—point out plot holes or character inconsistencies
—address issues related to point of view (POV) or narrative voice
—address pacing or structure
—manage the story’s timeline
—perform any research or fact-checking
—provide any feedback about the quality of your story as a whole
• If you're looking for a more in-depth edit, you may prefer a different editing service, such as copyediting or developmental editing. Not sure what your manuscript needs? Commissioning a manuscript review is a great way to determine whether or not your story is ready for a late-stage editing service, like proofreading.
• Regrettably, I am not an author/editor and a lawyer, and I cannot provide any legal answers or advice regarding copyrighted material or anything else.
